GEO consulting in Portugal: your brand in the answers of ChatGPT and Google

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of making your brand appear, and be described correctly, in the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI. This page explains, from start to finish, how it works in Portugal and what it can do for your business; at the end you will see how we work with you.

What GEO is, and why SEO is not enough

When a customer types "dental clinic in Porto" into Google, they get ten blue links and choose which one to click. When they ask ChatGPT the same question, they do not get a list: they get an answer of a few sentences. "You could try these three clinics: one stands out for implants, another is in Boavista." Your business's name is in those sentences or it is not. The choice is no longer made by the customer, but by the AI that writes the answer.

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the work of making your brand appear in those answers and be described correctly. SEO lifts your website on Google; GEO prepares your whole brand to be read and understood by generative AI engines. We explain the basics in plain words in our post on what is GEO; here we focus on what it means for a business in Portugal.

The difference, in three sentences:

  • SEO is about the website; GEO is about the brand. To describe a business, AI looks at its website, but also at its Google Business Profile, its social media, its reviews and the other sites that talk about it.
  • In SEO the position counts; in GEO the description counts. Being first is not enough: the AI has to say correctly what you do, where you are and who you serve.
  • SEO is part of GEO. AI tools learn from the web who to recommend. Without solid SEO there is no GEO.

Where people in Portugal now ask their questions

Portugal is adopting generative AI faster than the European average. According to Eurostat, in 2025, 38.7% of Portuguese aged 16 to 74 used at least one generative AI tool in the previous three months; the EU average is 32.7%. Among younger people the gap is wider: 76.5% of 16 to 24 year-olds in Portugal, against 63.8% in the EU. And 19.9% of Portuguese already use these tools for work, against 15.4% in the EU.

Your customers do not ask in just one place. These are the places where a Portuguese brand needs to appear:

  • ChatGPT: the tool most people think of when they hear "artificial intelligence". It can search the web and bring back current information.
  • Google's AI Overviews (Visão geral de IA): Google launched these summaries at the top of the results in Portugal in March 2025, in Portuguese and English. Today, even in a classic search, the first thing a customer reads is often an answer written by AI.
  • Gemini: Google's own assistant, built into Android phones and Google apps.
  • Copilot: Microsoft's assistant, in Windows and Edge; it relies largely on Bing.
  • Perplexity: shows the sources it used under each answer; the best tool for seeing where AI gets its information about your brand.

For your business this means that some customers still look at Google's classic results, while a growing and younger group asks AI directly. You need to be present in both.

Portuguese, yes, but which Portuguese?

This is the point most Portuguese brands miss. Most Portuguese-language text on the internet comes from Brazil, a country with about twenty times Portugal's population. Because AI tools learn from that text, they often answer in Brazilian Portuguese and may favour Brazilian sources.

In practice, your customer says "telemóvel", "marcação", "pequeno-almoço"; a Brazilian says "celular", "agendamento", "café da manhã". The words you use on your website, your Google Business Profile and your social media influence whether AI connects your brand with a question asked in Portugal.

What to do:

  1. Write your website and profiles in European Portuguese; do not reuse texts written for Brazil.
  2. Give your services the names people in Portugal actually use. Ask your customers how they search and use those words.
  3. Tell the machine the language too: each page's language tag and the links between language versions (hreflang) must be right.
  4. Do not forget English. In Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, tourists and foreigners living in Portugal ask the same question in English. We explain this in detail in our guide to GEO and SEO consulting in Lisbon.

The four fronts of your brand in Portugal

AI does not know a brand from one page; it knows it from everything written about it. That is why we work on GEO across four fronts at once.

1. Google Business Profile (Perfil da Empresa no Google)

The box that appears when someone searches for your name on Google or Google Maps. Gemini and Google's AI answers look here first when they recommend a business near the customer.

  • Choose as your main category the one that describes your business most precisely.
  • Write in the description, in one sentence, what you do, for whom and where; use the same sentence on your website and social media.
  • Add municipal holidays to your opening hours as well as national ones. In Lisbon on 13 June (Santo António) and in Porto on 24 June (São João) many businesses close; wrong hours lead AI to give wrong information about you.

2. Website

The website's job is to describe your brand unambiguously, for people and for machines.

  • The first sentence of the homepage says what you do, for whom and where.
  • Show your company details clearly (company name, address, contacts). For most companies in Portugal this is already a legal information duty; for the machine, it is a confirmation of identity.
  • Write the questions customers ask, and the answers, in plain text: reference prices, opening hours, parking, payment methods, the languages you serve in.
  • Show access to the electronic complaints book (Livro de Reclamações Eletrónico) on your website. For companies with a website it is an obligation, and it builds trust.

3. Social media

In Portugal, the first contact between a business and a customer often happens on Instagram and Facebook; in services to companies, on LinkedIn. AI reads these accounts too.

  • Use the same sentence in your bio as on your website and Google Business Profile.
  • Write the company name exactly the same on every account.
  • Update or close old accounts you no longer use; that is where contradictory information appears most.

4. Reviews and replies

The text written most about a brand on the internet is often the sum of its customer reviews. In Portugal, the places that matter most are:

  • Google reviews: for every sector.
  • TripAdvisor and TheFork: for restaurants and tourism.
  • Booking.com: for accommodation.
  • Livro de Reclamações and Portal da Queixa: where complaints can be visible to the public.

Reply to every review, the negative ones included, briefly and personally. Mention the service and the location naturally. Every reply is one more chance to say, in your own words, what you do.

The other sources AI looks at in Portugal

Whatever you write on your own website, if your name does not appear on other sites, AI finds it hard to recommend you. Ask Perplexity "what is the best … in Lisbon" and look at the sources, and you will keep finding the same kinds of sites:

  • National and regional press: newspapers such as Público, Expresso, Jornal de Notícias and Observador, and their city guides.
  • "Best of" lists and city guides, such as Time Out Lisboa and Time Out Porto.
  • Official and institutional sources: VisitPortugal and the regional tourism sites, and each sector's associations.
  • Sector platforms and directories: booking, listing and comparison sites.

On the platforms you can join, create or claim your profile; for editorial lists, send a short, concrete introduction. Be wary of paid offers to "get on the list".

The technical base: a website machines can read

The technical side of GEO is invisible, but it is what lets AI recognise you without guessing.

  • Structured data (schema): your website's code should hold a machine-readable identity card with your name, address, phone, opening hours, the areas you serve and links to your brand's other accounts.
  • Allow the AI crawlers: your robots.txt should not block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended by accident. Many websites do it without knowing.
  • llms.txt: a file at the root of your website, for AI agents, that sums up in plain text what you do, your prices and your important pages. We use one on our own website too.
  • Language versions: Portuguese and English pages must link to each other, and every page must name its own address as canonical.
  • Speed and simplicity: heavy pages made only of images are unreadable to a machine. Important information has to be in the text.

How we measure where you stand

In GEO, measuring is not looking at a single position. We track three things together:

  1. Test questions: every month we ask the same tools the same questions, built around your business, in Portuguese and English. Does your name appear? Is the description right? Which source is shown?
  2. GEO score: with MessGEO, our own tool, we measure how ready your website is for AI search and show where you are losing ground. More on the GEO analysis page.
  3. Visits from AI: in Google Analytics we track visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot separately. In Europe, Analytics only counts people who accept cookies, so it is a sample; what matters is the change from month to month.

How long does it take? Fixes to your website and profiles are usually crawled within a few weeks; AI answers can take longer to change. An example from our own website: we published our district guides in the first half of October 2026, and for the search "consultoria seo barreiro" we moved from position 88 to 3 on Google in about two weeks. AI answers feed on that same trail on the web.

Which businesses it is for

GEO matters for any business whose customers ask before they decide. In Portugal it makes the biggest difference for:

  • Clinics and health services: areas where trust is everything and customers research first.
  • Restaurants, accommodation and tourism: two audiences asking in Portuguese and English.
  • Beauty and personal care: businesses where people check reviews and photos before booking.
  • Professional services: law, accounting, real estate, consulting.
  • Exporters and B2B companies: buyers abroad asking in English.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Does GEO replace SEO?+
No. SEO is what gets your website found on Google, and it is part of GEO. AI tools learn from the web who to recommend; without solid SEO there is no GEO. GEO adds your Google Business Profile, your social media, your reviews and the other sources that talk about you.
Do you write content in European Portuguese?+
Yes. For your customers in Portugal we write in European Portuguese, never in Brazilian Portuguese. If you need to reach tourists or foreigners living in Portugal, we also write the English versions.
How do you measure results?+
In three ways: every month we ask the same AI tools the same questions and compare the answers, we measure your GEO score with MessGEO, and we track the visits coming from AI tools in Google Analytics.
When will I see results?+
Fixes to your website and profiles are usually crawled within a few weeks. AI answers can take longer to change; that is why we measure and report every month. No serious GEO work guarantees a position or an answer.
What language are meetings held in?+
English. Our team is made up of digital nomads and all our meetings are held in English. The content for your customers in Portugal is written in European Portuguese.
How much does GEO work cost?+
It depends on the scope. After the free 30-minute call we define the smallest valuable first step, with a clear plan and a fixed price; you know the cost before we start.
Do complaints in the Livro de Reclamações affect GEO?+
Anything public about your brand can become part of how AI describes it. Answering complaints on time and calmly protects both the customer relationship and your brand's image on the web.
Do you only work in Portugal?+
Portugal is our main market. We also work remotely with brands in Türkiye and other countries.
