What SEO is today, and why it is the base of everything
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the work of getting your website into the top positions on Google when someone searches for what you sell. For years that meant choosing keywords and getting links. Today it means more: a fast, well-built website, content that truly answers customers' questions, and a brand Google trusts.
There is a new reason to take SEO seriously. AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews (Visão geral de IA) learn from the web who to recommend. A website that Google cannot find, or cannot understand, does not reach AI answers either. That is why SEO is the base of our GEO consulting: first the website, then the whole brand. We explain this shift in our post SEO is not dead, the rules changed.
The search market in Portugal
In Portugal, almost all search goes through Google. According to StatCounter, in September 2026 Google had 87.3% of searches in the country and Bing 10.2%. Bing is small but not irrelevant: Microsoft's Copilot, on every Windows computer, relies on it to a large extent.
People in Portugal research before they buy. According to Eurostat, in 2025, 76.0% of Portuguese aged 16 to 74 used the internet to look for information about goods and services, above the EU average (71.8%). But only 49.6% bought online in the previous three months, against 62.4% in the EU. For anyone selling online in Portugal this means two things: the customer is already searching, and e-commerce still has plenty of room to grow.
Since March 2025 there has been another change: Google's AI Overviews appear at the top of many results in Portugal. For some searches the customer reads the answer and no longer clicks. Today's SEO has to think about both: appearing in the links and being the source the AI uses to write that answer.
Keywords in European Portuguese
Word choice is where Portuguese websites lose the most traffic. Many keyword tools and reference texts are in Brazilian Portuguese, and the words are not the same: in Portugal people search for "telemóvel", "marcação", "casa de banho" and "explicações"; in Brazil, "celular", "agendamento", "banheiro" and "aulas particulares". A website written with the wrong words can be well built and still not appear for people searching in Portugal.
What we do:
- Keyword research in European Portuguese, based on real searches made in Portugal and the language your customers use.
- Search intent: we separate people looking for information ("how to choose an accountant") from people ready to buy ("accountant in Braga") and build the right page for each.
- Local searches: many searches in Portugal include a place ("perto de mim", the name of the city, municipality or neighbourhood). We work on those variations for the areas your business really serves.
- English, when it makes sense: in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve many customers search in English. In that case the English version gets its own keywords, not a literal translation.
Technical SEO: the base nobody sees
Before content, Google has to be able to read the website. This is where many Portuguese websites lose positions without knowing.
- Crawling and indexing: in Google Search Console we check which pages are indexed, which were excluded and why, and whether the sitemap is right.
- Speed and experience: we measure the Core Web Vitals, the indicators Google uses to assess page speed and stability, especially on mobile, where many customers search.
- Structure: a unique title and description on every page, headings in a logical order, clean addresses and internal links with the right words.
- Languages: if the website has Portuguese and English, each version points to the other (hreflang) and names its own address as canonical.
- Structured data (schema): the business's identity card in the website's code, with name, address, opening hours, services and the areas it serves.
- Domain: a .pt domain is a clear signal that the website targets Portugal; a .com can also work well, as long as the content, language and contact details point to the country.
Local SEO: showing up on the map and close to the customer
For businesses with customers in a specific area, a large share of searches ends on Google's map. There, what counts is the Google Business Profile, consistent details and reviews.
- Name, address and phone must be exactly the same on the website, the Google Business Profile, social media and directories.
- If you work in several municipalities or districts, each important area deserves its own page with genuinely local content; pages copied from one another with only the city name changed can be penalised by Google.
- Reviews, and the replies to them, influence both the position on the map and the customer's decision.
We cover the Google Business Profile and reviews in detail on the GEO consulting page, because they are also AI's first sources.
Content that answers the right questions
Google, and AI, reward content that answers customers' questions better than the rest. In practice:
- One page per service, with what it includes, who it is for, what it costs (at least a reference price) and frequently asked questions.
- Guides and articles for the questions customers ask before buying, linked to the service pages with the right keywords.
- Who writes: Google values demonstrated experience and knowledge. Showing who is behind the company and the information builds trust.
- Genuinely local content: on our own website we wrote a different guide for every district we work in, with each one's reality, instead of repeated pages.
Authority: the links that count
Links from other websites are still one of Google's strongest signals. In Portugal, the most valuable ones come from national and regional press, sector associations, partners, suppliers and local bodies. One good link from a relevant website is worth more than dozens of bought links, and buying links breaks Google's rules and can lead to penalties. We only work with links earned through content and real relationships.
Measuring without breaking the GDPR
In Portugal, as across the EU, analytics cookies can only be used with the visitor's consent. This has a practical consequence many companies do not know: Google Analytics only counts people who accept cookies, so the numbers are a sample. We set up measurement to respect consent and read the data from several sources:
- Google Search Console: impressions, clicks and positions, without cookies or sampling.
- Google Analytics 4, with consent: where visitors come from and what they do on the website.
- Conversions: forms, calls and messages, which are what really matters to the business.
An example from our own website: after we published our district guides in October 2026, the search "consultoria seo setubal" moved from position 86 to 8 on Google in about two weeks, and the website's total impressions almost tripled compared with the previous two weeks.
Which businesses it is for
- E-commerce: online shops that want to grow in a market with plenty still to win.
- Local businesses: clinics, restaurants, accommodation, beauty, repair shops, home services.
- Professional services: law, accounting, real estate, consulting.
- B2B companies and exporters: customers searching in Portuguese and English, in Portugal and abroad.
